WRC Transportation Committee to Make Structural Changes

The Windham Regional Commission has begun the process of transitioning our Transportation Committee to a Transportation Advisory Committee. The change in structure of the WRC Transportation Committee will give all towns the option to appoint a dedicated representative to the Transportation Advisory Committee outside of the normal commissioner structure of the Windham Regional Commission. The goal of the process is to expand regional representation on the Committee, include more towns in the regional transportation planning process and create a broader regional forum to discuss shared transportation challenges and the impact of statewide transportation policy.

The Windham Regional Transportation Committee works to assist our towns in addressing transportation issues within their communities, provide a forum for discussion of common challenges and potential solutions for communities across the region, as well as help communities in the Windham Region implement local, regional and state transportation policy. The Transportation Committee also serves as a voice for the region to the Vermont Agency of Transportation, the committee giving input to the State from our region on various VTrans programs including the project selection process for the Vermont Capital Program. We also frequently host VTrans staff to discuss a variety of state transportation policies and initiatives providing an opportunity for local residents to speak directly with Agency of Transportation staff.

The goal of the change from a Transportation Committee to a Transportation Advisory Committee is to allow more towns the opportunity to participate in the transportation planning and the VTrans infrastructure project prioritization process. It will also bring the Windham Regional in line with other Regional Planning Commissions around the state. Expanding membership on the committee will create a more robust regional forum for discussion of transportation planning and policies, give more towns the opportunity to have input on statewide initiatives and the Vermont Capital Program, as well as interface directly with VTrans representatives.
