Conway Students Investigate Forestry in the Region
Working with the Windham Regional Commission and other partners including the Vermont Land Trust, Riverledge Foundation, and the Windham County Forester, the student team will develop maps and other materials to educate the general public about why this working landscape matters, and make recommendations about how the forest economy can be sustained while protecting the integrity of the forested landscape and promoting resource-efficient land use.
In mid-February the students convened a focus group of foresters and forest workers to discuss forest management issues within the Windham Region. They are also having numerous meetings around the Region to collect information.
Case studies will also inform their research,. The students made a field trip to Readsboro Commissioner John Whitman’s property in Readsboro on Feb. 15th. John has a large parcel that's enrolled in Current Use, has a conservation easement under the Vermont Land Trust, and has a history of "working forest" activities, including the current harvest-in-process.
When the Conway School project is completed in early spring, they will attend a WRC Natural Resources Committee hosted forum to present their work.
